Distribution of Cs, Na, and Ba between great monocrystals of KCl and water solution was investigated. Impurity was either labelled by long-lived radioactive isotopes or was activated after growth of the crystals by neutrons in a nuclear reactor. No influence on partition coefficients was caused by using radioactive tracers, e.g. due to raised inclusion of mother liquor. Between impurity concentrations from 3·10–4 to 10–1 in the solution the partition coefficients were nearly constant and about 10–3 for Na, about 10–4 for Cs, and <5·10–5 for Ba in KCl at temperatures of 40° C. If different impurity ions were built in simultaneously, the partition coefficients were independent of composition of solution. In case of Cs in KCl capture of Cs increased with increasing temperature.

Detection of agricultural chemicals in ground water has prompted numerous studies. Federal, state, and regional studies were conducted in the last 10 years in order to assess the occurrence of agricultural chemicals in ground water. The results of the studies present the number or percentage of samples with agricultural chemicals above the drinking water standard or health advisory levels as well as samples with detections of one or more compounds. Data comparison from one state or region to another are frequently referred to by regulatory and agency personnel involved in water quality and agriculture issues. Unless the history of pesticide use, method of chemical analyses, detection limits, statistical design of the sampling plan, well type, well depth, geology of the formation material, and typical land use around the wellhead are known, such comparisons can be misleading. Reporting the limitations or presenting a disclaimer should be a key element for a study so that "apples and oranges" are not compared.  相似文献

The areal distribution of stream sediment and source-rock heavy mineralogy was studied to determine the mineralogical relations between source and derived sediment in the Piney Creek drainage basin of Wyoming. Heavy-mineral distribution in the streams was characterized using factor analysis. The results of analyses show that for an actively degrading stream system, the heavy-mineral composition of stream sediment is controlled to a considerable extent by the composition of local sediment sources and by continuous addition of detritus from bank cutting. Only the most common minerals from upstream sources persist as statistically significant variables downstream. In some cases the heavy-mineral mineral composition of stream sediment can be controlled by comparatively few, or volumetrically rare source rocks, even though more abundant source rocks supply a wide range of heavy minerals. Specific drainage configurations such as lakes and proximity of streams to major sediment sources significantly modify sediment mineralogy immediately downstream.  相似文献

During the sediment acoustics experiment in 1999 (SAX99), several researchers measured sound speed and attenuation. Together, the measurements span the frequency range of about 125 Hz-400 kHz. The data are unique both for the frequency range spanned at a common location, and for the extensive environmental characterization that was carried out as part of SAX99. Environmental measurements were sufficient to determine or bound the values of almost all the sediment and pore water physical property input parameters of the Biot poroelastic model for sediment. However, the measurement uncertainties for some of the parameters result in significant uncertainties for Biot-model predictions. Here, measured sound-speed and attenuation results are compared to the frequency dependence predicted by Biot theory and a simpler "effective density" fluid model derived from Biot theory. Model/data comparisons are shown where the uncertainty in Biot predictions due to the measurement uncertainties for values of each input parameter are quantified. A final set of parameter values, for use in other modeling applications e.g., in modeling backscattering (Williams et al., 2002) are given, that optimize the fit of the Biot and effective density fluid models to the sound-speed dispersion and attenuation measured during SAX99. The results indicate that the variation of sound speed with frequency is fairly well modeled by Biot theory but the variation of attenuation with frequency deviates from Biot theory predictions for homogeneous sediment as frequency increases. This deviation may be due to scattering from volume heterogeneity. Another possibility for this deviation is shearing at grain contacts hypothesized by Buckingham; comparisons are also made with this model.  相似文献

A linear FM sonar system was developed to support the objective of remote acoustic classification of seafloor sediments. It is a calibrated, wideband, digital, frequency modulated sonar that provides quantitative, high-resolution, low-noise sub-bottom data. Since the linear sonar system can precisely transmit a specified waveform, the calibrated digitally recorded reflection data can be processed to estimate the acoustic impulse response of the seabed and sediment attenuation. An acoustic pulse with special frequency domain weighting characteristics is designed to provide low temporal sidelobe levels and a nearly constant resolution with depth even after passing through a sediment with high losses such as sand. After correlation processing, the wideband acoustic pulse yields an effective beam pattern with high spatial resolution and insignificant sidelobe levels. Data sets generated with the FM profiler indicate that the required temporal and spatial characteristics of the sonar are realized in practice  相似文献

Phosphatic fossils from the lower Cenomanian have been studied for mineralogy and trace-element content. The values obtained for the fossils are compared with the concentrations in surrounding limestone and ash of Recent marine animals.Calcinated Recent animals yield alkali phosphates, zinc and strontium; rare earths are lacking. Presence of rare earths in fossils suggests that they were obtained during diagenesis. Their distribution in fossils fluctuates strongly even among specimens of the same species.  相似文献

Recent iron sediments forming at present in a bay of the volcanic island Palaea Kameni within the caldera of Santorini, Aegean Sea, have been investigated for their mineralogy and geochemistry. For the first time siderite has been found in a marine environment to be major constituent of a recent sediment. Further main constituents are opal, ferric hydroxide, vivianite, ferrous hydroxide, and possibly ferrous silicate. The chemical composition both of the solid material of the sediment cores and of their pore solution indicate that the ore forming solutions have originated from the leaching of volcanic kalk-alcaline rocks by hot acid solutions. This is in agreement with experimental leaching of these rock types. No enrichment of lead, copper, zinc etc. was found in the sediments. Iron oxidizing bacteria in the reddish-brown ferric hydroxide sediments now forming in bays of the Kameni Islands have been studied by light and electron microscopic investigations. Samples from the uppermost parts of the sediment consist mainly of the ferric hydroxide stalks of the iron bacteriumGallionella ferruginea. The stalks showing their morphological characteristics occur in such masses that there is no doubt concerning the presence, activity and share of these bacteria in the process of iron sedimentation. Phases of sedimentation process and kinetics of ferric hydroxide stalk formation have been determined qualitatively and quantitatively by in-situ-experiments using artificial growing surfaces (underwater “Aufwuchs” on glass slides). The results obtained are compared to similar iron sedimentation in fresh water habitats and iron rich carbonate springs discussed in literature in connection with the problem of submarine exhalative sedimentary iron ore formation.  相似文献

This paper proposes a method, based on the Biot model, for estimating the physical and acoustic properties of surficial ocean sediments from normal incidence reflection data acquired by a chirp sonar. The inversion method estimates sediment porosity from reflection coefficient measurements and, using the estimated porosity and the measured change in fast wave attenuation with frequency, estimates the permeability of the top sediment layer. The spectral ratio of echoes from the interface at the base of the upper sediment layer and from the sediment-water interface provides a measure of the change in attenuation with frequency. Given the porosity and permeability estimates, the Kozeny-Carman equation provides the mean grain size and the inversion method yields the acoustic properties of top sediment layer. The inversion technique is tested using chirp sonar data collected at the 1999 Sediment Acoustics Experiment (SAX-99) site. Remote estimates of porosity, grain size, and permeability agree with direct measurements of those properties.  相似文献
